School Recycling
Securing Student Involvement
There are many opportunities to involve students in the recycling process. Although the program relies on a specific group of students responsible for collection and monitoring, all students from every sector of school life can be involved in the recycling process. For example kindergarten and pre-K can create artwork for the signage that will be hung around the school encouraging students to recycle; older students can be monitors for the floor collection bins; and recycling clubs can sponsor a school wide contest between classrooms and floors.
Below are a few best practices for getting the entire school involved.
- Host a kick off event to announce the program.
- Select a week or month to give recycling tips; ideas might include morning announcements, school newspapers or classroom flyers
- Create a recycling club
- Incorporate recycling into community service requirements
- Create a student rewards program at the school store for participants
- Classrooms can plan a weekly assignment addressing ways to reuse, recycle, and reduce waste
